Acute care hospitals experiencing coding productivity declines across all patient types

March 29, 2016 (Allentown, PA)— H.I.M. ON CALL—an outsourced services company for health information management (HIM), coding, data quality audits, and revenue cycle—released important findings related to the status of coder productivity in ICD-10. The informal study included 30 participants representing 10 acute care hospitals and health systems. Study results were announced by Joseph J. Gurrieri, RHIA, CHP, President and COO.

H.I.M. ON CALL’s findings revealed an average decrease in productivity by 36% for Inpatient, 22% for Ambulatory Surgery, and 21% for Emergency Department cases. While these scores are better than predicted, all study participants confirmed that ICD-10 productivity remains an important metric to measure and trend alongside coding accuracy and quality. In a similar study conducted by HCPro, nearly half of all participants noted productivity declines as a top issue.

According to Melanie Endicott, MBA/HCM, RHIA, CDIP, CCS, CCS-P, FAHIMA, senior director of HIM practice excellence, coding and CDI products development at AHIMA, in her recent Code Cracker blog, a potential slowdown in productivity could be due to incomplete documentation and the need for coding professionals to dig deeper into the health record. H.I.M. ON CALL recommends that HIM directors and coding managers remain aware of specific areas of ICD-10 that are causing the most difficulty and assess if these slowdowns are due to incomplete documentation as Ms. Endicott mentions.
