Valerie Fernandez, MBA, CCS, CPC, CIC CPMA

Valerie Fernandez has an MBA from Drexel University and possesses over 20 years of progressive healthcare management experience with roots in the Philadelphia Pennsylvania area. Valerie has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida in Education and she is currently a PhD candidate in Public Service Leadership with a concentration in Healthcare at Capella University.
Currently she is the Manager of Coding Program Development at H.I.M.ON CALL. Responsibilities include developing and presenting pertinent topics of interest to hospital administrators, executive leadership, physicians, coders, and clinical documentation improvement specialists.
Previously an Assistant Director of Health Information Management at the Hospital for Special Surgery, responsibilities focused on implementation planning for the transition to ICD-10 that included financial impact analysis, readiness assessments, training, and support for physicians, leadership, and ancillary staff in the hospital and the affiliated physician practices.
Valerie previously held the position of Revenue Manager at Weill Cornell Medical College Department of Neurological Surgery. Responsible for coding, compliance, revenue maximization and fiscal management.
Valerie is an active member of the American Academy of Professional Coders and AAPC and throughout her career she provided training to physicians, ancillary staff, and other members. She later secured the position of President of the Midtown Manhattan Chapter and subsequently the Manhattan Chapter. Valerie is also a member of AHIMA and is an approved ICD-10 CM and ICD-10 PCS trainer.
Valerie teaches outpatient and inpatient facility coding and billing at Hunter College in the Department of Continuing Education and she is an accomplished writer with articles published in and submitted to Healthcare Billing and Management Journals.
